The Old Lyme Dock Company is situated just a
short distance from Old Lyme's Historic Town Center on Lyme Street
(CT Route 1). Here you will find a charming thoroughfare, lined with
vintage homes, galleries and boutiques. Also nearby is a modern-day
commerce area with a grocery store, banks, Post Office, a Hair Salon
and other shops.
The Arts
Old Lyme's committment to the celebration and preservation of the Arts will be
quickly apparent to first-time visitors.
A short walk North on Lyme Street will
bring you to the
Lyme Academy of Fine Arts, a noted independant college of fine arts. Also nearby is
the Florence Griswold Museum,
the home of America's best-known Impressionist art colony.
Dining
Two of the area's most noted formal dining establishments are found on
Lyme street as well; The award-winning
Bee & Thistle Inn (voted CT's most romantic dining spot!)and the formal eleganceof the historic
Old Lyme Inn. For top-notch informal dining there's The Hideaway, just around
the corner from Lyme Street, near the A & P shopping center, as well
as Cherystones, a few miles from the Dock on Route 156. The Old Lyme
Dock can arrange transportation to and from any of these locations if
you are a transient visitor.
Other Local Ports
Across the River is Old Saybrook, a busy commercial center on the shorline.
Further up river, you can also visit historic Essex, CT, which features the
CT River Museum
, Essex Steam Train,
and the oldest continually operating inn in America, the Griswold Inn.
Hamburg Cove, further North is another popular boating destination, for it's secluded anchorage
and natural beauty.
Back to Nature
The Old Lyme Dock is located on the banks of one of the most beautifully
preserved estuaries in the world, the lower Connecticut River. A short
dinghy or kayak ride will take you to the wonderfully secluded back waters
of the Lieutenant River, as well as the expansive estuaries behind
Great Island and Poverty Island. These areas are teeming with eagles,
osprey, hawks, herons and other rare aquatic fowl.
